The Los Fresnos Athletic Trainers are committed to delivering the best quality of athletic training services for our athletes. We will educate our students on nutrition and injury prevention. We will also employ innovative therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation techniques to ensure the safest and fastest return to play from injury.

What is athletic training?

The profession of athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.

Who are licensed athletic trainers?

Licensed Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, sports medicine clinicians who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Licensed Athletic Trainers work under the direction of a physician as prescribed by Texas state licensure statutes.

Licensed Athletic Trainers are sometimes confused with personal trainers. There is, however, a large difference in the education, skillset, job duties and clients of an athletic trainer and a personal trainer. The athletic training academic curriculum and clinical training follows the medical model. Licensed Athletic Trainers must hold a baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate degree which includes at least 24 hours of combined academic credit from athletic training content course areas and complete an 1800 clock hour’s apprenticeship in a college or university intercollegiate sports program. Licensed Athletic Trainers must then pass a written and oral state exam. Licensed Athletic Trainers must also have 40 hours of continuing education units over a two year period to maintain their license.
